The Cabinet approved the Culture Ministry’s proposal, to register the Loy Krathong festival as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.
Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol said yesterday that Loy Krathong has been listed as national cultural wisdom since 2011 and it has been recognised by the Thai government as a “soft power” festival, which has the potential to boost foreign tourism.
So far, Thai massage, Khon mask dance, Songkran Thai New Year festival, Tom Yum Gung spicy and sour shrimp soup, Nora traditional dance drama and the traditional Kebaya upper garment for women have been listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritages.
