Scam call centres, based in Cambodia’s border town of Poipet opposite Aranyaprathet district of Sa Kaeo province, are the next crackdown targets.
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has decided to restrict cell phone and Wi-Fi connections to the town.
NBTC officials and police, from the Second Region Provincial Police Bureau, met today to address the problem of call centres in Poipet and the actions that need to be taken to disrupt their operations.
NBTC Acting Secretary-General Trairat Wiriyasirikul told the media that they had agreed to dismantle Wi-Fi and cell phone towers over 60 metres tall, to reduce the strength of Wi-Fi and cell phone signals reaching Cambodia.
He explained that signals do spill into Cambodia, but at limited level. Many buildings in Poipet have, however, been constructed close to the Thai border, enabling them to utilise the signals.
According to the NBTC, four major and 13 smaller companies hold concessions to provide internet connections to Cambodia and Trairat said that they have all been ordered to cut internet connections from their cell towers located fewer than 100 metres from the border line.
NBTC officials and police also inspected mobile cell and internet connection sites at several locations in Aranyaprathet district today.
