Police arrested a Taiwanese national at a condominium in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district today. The man, identified only as ‘Lieu’, is suspected of being the leader of a call centre gang in Thailand.
The suspect is wanted by police in Samut Prakan on charges of defrauding the public. A warrant for his arrest had been issued by the Phra Pradaeng court.
Earlier, four Thai men, believed to have worked for Lieu, were arrested by the police.
Police say that Lieu, who has previously served time in a Thai prison, got to know one of the four Thai suspects, identified as ‘Ong-art’, in the prison. Both of them have kept in touch since their release.
According to the police, Lieu would allegedly hire Thai people to rent rooms in several apartment buildings in Bangkok and its neighbouring provinces. He would then contact his team in China and instruct them to ship SIM boxes from China and Cambodia to the apartments in Thailand.
Then, he would allegedly get Ong-art to go to the apartments to install the SIM boxes under guidance via video calls. After completing the work, Lieu would send ‘digital money’, to be shared between Ong-art and the other three Thais, according to the police.
Police revealed that Lieu is also wanted in Taiwan on fraud charges. He was released from Khlong Prem prison in 2020 after serving a 10 years for credit card fraud.
