A man has died from drinking herbal liqueur laced with methanol, bringing the number of deaths to three.
Dr. Pairoj Surattanawanich, deputy director general of the department of medical services, says that some of the 25 people admitted to hospital after drinking a herbal liqueur contaminated with methanol are in a critical condition in ICU, with 13 on ventilators.
These patients need to be closely monitored by medical staff, he said, because there is a possibility that they could go blind and some others are suffering from kidney failure and acidosis.
Last week, it was reported that a cluster of people rushed to hospitals, after drinking herbal liqueurs containing methanol. The patients came from Min Buri, Nong Jog and Klong Sam Wa in Bangkok. Authorities collected samples from stalls selling liqueurs and found that they had been laced with methanol.
A factory in Saphan Sung is believed to have supplied the toxic product.
Officials strongly advise that people who drank herbal liqueurs in those areas and are experiencing dizziness, vomiting or suddenly blurred vision should go to hospital immediately, adding that the symptoms can appear within a few days of consumption.
