Fatalities among those who consumed herbal liqueurs laced with deadly methanol rose to eight yesterday, while six remain in hospital.
A total of 44 patients have been admitted to various hospitals in and around Bangkok since August 22nd, after consuming the contaminated herbal liqueurs, locally known as “Ya Dong”, according to the Public Health Ministry.
An emergency centre has been set up at Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital, in the Kan Na Yao district, to manage patients from surrounding areas.
In response to the incident, at least 18 stalls selling the liqueurs have been shut down. Tests reveal that most of the liqueurs being sold at these stalls were contaminated with methanol. The patients had purchased the Ya Dong from in the Min Buri, Lat Krabang and Khlong Samwa districts.
