On Monday, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will take charge of the investigation of the iCon Group, which is currently being run by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai told the media today, after chairing a meeting with the DSI, CIB and the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO).
He explained that the initial investigation work on the case by the police is nearing its completion. As it is a special case, with damages currently estimated at over 300 million baht, affecting more than 100 people, it is legally appropriate for it to be transferred to the DSI.
He said that the DSI will, however, need to cooperate with the CIB and AMLO in the investigation, adding that the government is ready to step in to help if needed.
Phumtham also noted that the Office of the Consumer Protection Board, which is supervised by the prime minister’s office, has been excluded from involvement in the investigation, because some of its officials are alleged to have been be aiding the iCon Group.
CIB Commissioner Pol Lt-Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej, meanwhile, said police have not yet decided on the issuance of arrest warrants for additional suspects implicated in the iCon Group scandal.
About 8,800 people, with investments estimated at 2.7 billion baht, have filed complaints with the police against the iCon Group.
