The ASEAN Informal Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will be held on January 18–19 in Langkawi, according to informed diplomatic sources.
The meeting, also known as the retreat, will be the first in a series of hundreds of gatherings under Malaysia's ASEAN chairmanship. Malaysia has adopted the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability” for its chairmanship, which begins on January 1, 2025.
Sources indicate that Malaysia has scheduled two summits under its chairmanship. The 47th Summit is set for May 5–7, 2025, with the 48th Summit planned for later in the year.
Under Malaysian leadership, ASEAN will aim to strengthen regional institutions, promote good governance, and enhance cross-border connectivity. Efforts will focus on bridging gaps among ASEAN member states through improved infrastructure and digital and institutional connectivity.
In the political and security pillar, Malaysia will promote regional peace and stability through dialogue, cooperation, and adherence to the principle of non-intervention.
For the economic pillar, the chair will focus on creating a single market and production base by facilitating the free movement of goods, services, capital, and skilled labor.
Under the social and cultural pillar, Malaysia will prioritize poverty reduction, healthcare improvements, and advancements in education, according to the sources.
