The government has agreed to pay two million baht compensation to relatives of those who died due to the floods in seven more southern provinces.
PM’s Office Minister Paradorn Prissananantakul said today that there are about 40 people who drowned or who died from flood-related causes in provinces other than Songkhla, where compensation has already been extended to the families of about 140 deceased, mostly in Hat Yai.
The money for the compensation will come from the Central Fund and the Fund to Assist Victims of Public Disasters.
Originally, the government only planned to provide the compensation to families of those who died in Hat Yai, which was hardest hit by the floods.
The plan was, however, heavily criticized as being unfair, when there were fatalities in other provinces as well.
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported today that floodwater in eight southern provinces is still steadily receding.
The current situation being:
• In Surat Thani, only Khien Sa, Phra Saeng, Ban Nasan and Phun Pin districts remain submerged, affecting 675 households.
• In Nakhon Si Thammarat, eight districts still remain under water and 57,000 households are affected.
• In Trang province, Kantang and Muang districts are submerged and over 3,000 households are affected.
• In Phatthalung province; Muang, Kuan Kanun, Khao Chaison, Bang Kaew, Pak Payoon and Pa Bon still remain under water. More than 5,000 households are affected.
• In Songkhla, ten districts are still submerged, affecting over 260,000 households.
• In Pattani, Nong Chik and Muang are still flooded, affecting 734 households.
• In Yala, Muang, Raman and Yaha districts are inundated, affecting over 1,400 households.
• In Narathiwat, Rue So, Su-ngai Padi, Rue So and Su-ngai Kolok remain flooded, affecting more than 4,500 households.
