Four construction workers were killed and about ten others injured when a concrete beam and a crane, on the construction site of the Bang Khun Thian-Ban Phaeo elevated motorway, collapsed onto the Rama II Road in Kok Krabue sub-district of Samut Sakhon early this morning.
The accident has forced the complete closure of Rama II Road and motorists are now being diverted via Kanchanapisek and Bang Khun Thian-Samut Sakhon routes into Nakhon Pathom.
Thanasan Sithapa, chief of the Samut Sakhon office of the Highways Department, said today that he cannot say when the road from Bang Khun Thian to Pak Thor will be reopened.
Samut Sakhon Governor Naris Niramaiwong said that three cranes are expected to arrive at the scene of the accident at about 1pm this afternoon to remove the debris from the road.
According to the police, two bodies, a Thai and a migrant worker, were found at the construction site and two others, both migrant workers, are believed to be buried under debris. About 10 other workers were injured and they were all taken to a hospital in Samut Sakhon.
The victims are employees of the PSCI Construction Company, a subcontractor for the construction of a section of the elevated motorway.
The Bang Khun Thian-Ban Phaeo section is part of the Bang Khun Thian-Pak Thor intercity motorway project.
