Khao Khitchakut National Park in Chanthaburi province has released images of gaurs in their natural habitat captured during a routine ‘Smart Patrol’ and natural resource monitoring operation on Sunday.
The images, provided by the chief of the Phra Bat Phluang Protection Unit, show the large wild mammals thriving in the forest. Park officials highlighted the sighting as crucial evidence of the richness of the local ecosystem and the biodiversity maintained within the protected area.
The gaur (Bos gaurus), a large mammal in the Bovidae family, requires pristine habitats with abundant food, water and safe shelter.
As key large herbivores, gaurs play a vital role in controlling plant growth and maintaining the balance of the forest food chain, making their presence a primary indicator of ecological health.
Authorities attributed the sighting to ongoing ‘Smart Patrol’ operations. In addition to deterring illegal logging and poaching, these patrols systematically collect wildlife population data to support long-term conservation and land management plans for the park.
Park officials confirm that officers will continue regular surveillance to mitigate threats to wildlife and natural resources.
The park administration is also coordinating with relevant agencies to reinforce preventive measures, ensuring the forest remains a safe, sustainable sanctuary for all wild species.
