Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the mother of a newborn boy who was found abandoned inside a temple restroom in Muang district in Samut Songkhram province late last night.
Officers from Muang Samut Songkhram Police Station and rescue workers from the Supprarachen Foundation were dispatched to Sri Satthatham Temple in Klong Khen sub-district after receiving a report from a local resident at around 10.15pm.
Upon arrival, rescuers discovered the infant wrapped in a towel inside a backpack, with his umbilical cord still attached. Two artificial fingernails were also found in the bag.
Emergency responders provided immediate first aid before transferring the baby to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed the infant is healthy.
Somsak, who found the baby, said he was out fishing and shrimping along his usual route. Around 10.15pm, as he walked past the restroom, he heard a strange noise.
On his way back, hearing a baby crying from the same spot, he decided to open the door, discovered the infant and immediately called the police for help.
Police suspect the mother may be a local teenager or a migrant worker who faced an unintended pregnancy and abandoned the infant.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance camera footage along nearby routes to identify and trace the mother.
