A total of 363 people have died and 2,090 others have been injured in 2,149 road accidents across the country in the past eight days, according to the ‘Directorate to prevent and reduce road accidents during New Year festival’.
On January 3rd alone, 32 people were killed and 199 others were injured in 205 accidents.
Cutting in accounted for 32.2%of the accidents, followed by speeding (31.22%) and poor visibility (17.56%). Motorcycles were involved in 90.04% of the accidents.
In the past eight days, Surat Thani had the most accidents and injured, at 78 and 88 respectively. Bangkok claims the highest death toll, at 21.
Not a single person was killed on the roads of Trang, Trat, Yala and Samut Songkhram during the eight days.
Meanwhile, the Probation Department reports that 7,237 people have been placed on probation during the past eight days, including 43 who have been ordered to wear electronic monitoring bracelets.
Drunk driving accounts for 6,927 (95.72%) of the probation cases, 304 cases of drinking while driving (4.20%), four cases of reckless driving (0.05%) and two cases of speeding(0.03%).
Bangkok saw the most people placed on probation (511), followed by Chiang Mai (427) and Samut Prakan (359).
