A 100-million baht super yacht caught fire at a pier in Phuket yesterday.
Pol Col Thirawat Liamsuwan, superintendent of Thalang district police, said that no one was injured on board the “Lady D” vessel. It was moored at Bo Grand Marina in Tambon Pa Klock, Thalang district.
He said that the second and third decks of the vessel caught fire. The cause is unknown. Five fire trucks were at the marina to extinguish fire.
The yacht was later towed out of the marina to Koh Nang, which is an uninhabited island, to prevent the fire from spreading to other vessels in the marina, as the yacht is reportedly storing about 100,000 litres of fuel onboard.
Booms have also been ordered from PTT Exploration by the governor, Mr. Pakpong Thaveewat, to be placed in the sea around the yacht to contain any fuel leakage.
The Lady D, which came from Malaysia’s Langkawi, is owned by Britain’s Hearts Investment Ltd and is captained by Canadian Ted Blenkers, who was reportedly abroad at the time of the fire. The vessel is 179 feet long and weighs 1,285 ton gross.
Damage to the yacht is yet to be assessed as the fire, although under control, is still smoldering.
