Thailand’s Ministry of Culture will propose that the cabinet submit the Chut Thai Phra Ratcha Niyom traditional costume (literally meaning “dress of royal endorsement”) for UNESCO intangible cultural heritage of humanity listing.
Culture Minister Sermsak Pongpanich said that the Cultural Promotion Department will prepare all the details for submission to UNESCO by the end of March, so that the Thai proposal can be added to UNESCO’s meeting agenda.
The Chut Thai Phra Ratcha Niyom costume was listed as a national cultural heritage last year.
Sermsak said that the costume reflects Thai culture, social practices, rituals and festivals and showcases Thai knowledge and craftsmanship.
Kowit Pakamart, director-general of the Cultural Promotion Department, said that the costume dates back over 1,400 years and underwent adjustments and evolution from the Dvaravati period until the early Rattanakosin period.
In 1960, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit ordered a study of the costume, which resulted in the creation of eight designs to be worn on various occasions, including state functions and at religious and wedding ceremonies.
