Two Samui Island ferry survivors rescued but the skipper dies

Rescue teams plucked two survivors of the capsized ferry from rough seas around Samui Island today and recovered the body of the vessel’s skipper.

Marine police sources said today that search is ongoing for four other missing people, adding that an air search by a helicopter is not possible due to poor visibility and strong winds.

There were altogether 16 people on board the ferry, Racha 4, including 12 crew members and four passengers. Eleven of those are now safe.

The ferry was chartered to carry garbage from the island to the mainland for disposal and capsized about five nautical miles from the pier, as it headed to Don Sak district of Surat Thani province Saturday night.

Mrs. Marasri Jairangsi, an official at Surat Thani social security office, said they will take care of all the survivors and the relatives of the dead skipper.
