Thailand sees surge in monkey pox cases in June

48 monkey pox cases were recorded in Thailand last month, a 2.3 fold increase from May and most of the patients are men, including 22 who are also infected with HIV, according to Dr. Tares Krassanairawiwong, director-general of the Disease Control Department.

Since the first case of monkey pox was found in Thailand in July last year, 91 more cases have been recorded and the rate of infection is steadily rising.

Of the 48 confirmed cases in June, 38 are in Bangkok, 3 in Samut Prakan, 2 each in Chon Buri and Nonthaburi and 1 each in Samut Sakhon, Phuket and Pathum Thani.

Dr. Tares said that all 48 patients had same-sex relationships.

He said that none of the patients are in a serious condition or died, as he recommended practicing safe sex and avoiding sex with strangers.

Symptoms will emerge within 21 days following close contact with an infected person, including blisters on the genitals, mouth and other parts of the body. Other symptoms include a headache and muscle pain.

Dr. Tares said that, if a person develops such symptoms, they must see a doctor immediately.
