Smog returns to Bangkok today with excessive PM2.5 in 20 areas

Smog returned to Bangkok today (Tuesday), with the level of PM2.5 dust particles exceeding safety levels in 20 areas, the Pollution Control Department reports.

Readings from Bangkok’s 46 monitoring stations show the level of PM2.5 particulate in the atmosphere exceeds 50 microns in the worst areas, with only one area considered safe and the other 25 areas moderate.

The 20 most polluted areas include Bang Khun Thian, Din Daeng, Samphanthawong, Want Thong Lang, Pathumwan, Bang Khor Laem, Yan Nawa, Bangkok Noi, Phasi Charoen, Bang Khen, Bang Phlad, Sathorn, Bang Sue, Lak Si, Bung Kum, Tambon Paknam of Samut Prakan’s Muang district, Tambon Songkhanong of Phra Pradaeng district and Tambon Mahachai of Muang district in Samut Sakhon.

The Pollution Control Department said the PM2.5 level will tend to increase throughout the day, as it advised people in the affected areas to take care of their health and to reduce out-door activities.

The department has sought cooperation from people in Bangkok and its surroundings to cease outdoor burning and drivers to stop using exhaust-belching vehicles.
