Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra told the Pheu Thai party’s annual meeting yesterday that Thailand’s current political and economic situations are more difficult now than ever, including during his time as prime minister.
Comparing the economy during the 1997 “Tom Yam Kung” financial crisis to a house, Thaksin said the problem back then was like having a damaged roof, which was easy to repair.
“The present economic situation is, however, far more severe, with a collapsing foundation that can be compared to damage to the base and structural pillars,” Thaksin claimed.
He said it will take more time to fix these problems than in the past and that Pheu Thai MPs and local representatives must explain the situation and the party’s efforts to solve it to the people.
“At present, many people are trying to distort the facts and criticize us. We should ignore them,” he said.
The party then held a traditional Songkran ceremony, during which Pheu Thai members, led by his daughter, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, lined up to receive blessings from Thaksin.
