A senior Pheu Thai MP has denied reports that Thaksin Shinawatra, the father of the party’s current leader and a former prime minister, has been influencing the party’s direction, as claimed in a petition.
Wisut Chainaroon, who is also the government chief whip, insisted that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will administer the country at her discretion, adding though that it would be normal for her to consult family members.
A petition has been filed with the Election Commission (EC) seeking the dissolution of the Pheu Thai party, alleging that it is allowing Thaksin Shinawatra, an outsider, to control it.
The anonymous petitioner has asked the EC to refer the case to the Constitutional Court. If the court rules in favour of the petitioner, the party could be dissolved for violating the Constitution.
Wisut said he is confident and has no concerns about the petition, as Thaksin has never given an order for Pheu Thai to follow.
He denied knowing whether Thaksin played a role in selecting Paetongtarn’s cabinet members, stating it was a matter for party executives.
He also commented on Thaksin’s outlining of government policies during a recent dinner talk hosted by the media, noting that it is beneficial for someone who has helped to address issues of illegal narcotics and poverty to extend his assistance.
He said discussions and consultations with such a person are normal and nothing to worry about.
