A nationalist group, led by Manager Group executive Sondhi Limthongkul, threatened today to take legal action against Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her Cabinet for their failure to respond to their call for the revocation of MoU 44 and JC 44, signed between Thailand and Cambodia.
The threat is contained in a letter, addressed to the prime minister, submitted after the expiry of the 15-day deadline set by the group for the government to revoke MoU 44 which, they claim, may lead to Thailand losing Kut Island, off the coast of Trat province, to Cambodia, which is claiming sovereignty over the island.
The group also wants JC 44 to be scrapped, because the agreement calls for the creation of a Joint Technical Committee by Cambodia and Thailand to undertake negotiations on the development of oil and gas in the overlapping claim area, covering about 26,000 square kilometres in the Gulf of Thailand.
The group accuse the prime minister and the Cabinet for dereliction of duty by failing to protect the territorial sovereignty of Thailand, in violations of Sections 51, 52, 53 and 57 of the Constitution, as well as Sections 119 and 120 of the Criminal Code.
The letter was received by an official at the complaint centre at Government House.
