Fugitive former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has posted on Facebook about her recent meal at a restaurant in London which serves Khao Soi, a signature dish from northern Thailand.
The restaurant’s name is “Khao Soi”, but pronounced Khao Soi-I, to sound like a Japanese word, Yingluck said.
She was accompanied for the meal by her son, Supasek Amonrchat, 22.
“I’m happy, on behalf of Thai northerners, that our Khao Soi dish has become so popular in London, judging from the long queue at the restaurant,” she wrote.
She also mentioned TasteAtlas, an experiential travel online guide for traditional food lovers, which ranked Khao Soi sixth among the 100 best dishes in the world in April.
Yingluck is now living in exile, after fleeing Thailand in 2017, just days before she was sentenced (in absentia) for negligence in implementing the controversial rice subsidy program.
The Shinawatra family has deep roots in the north, especially in Chiang Mai province, which has been the ruling Pheu Thai party’s stronghold for years.
