The Election Commission (EC) has ordered a fresh election to be held for the mayor of the Pathum Thani Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO), after the winner of the June 30 election, Charn Puangpetch, was disqualified.
Charn, however, could run again in the fresh election, the date of which has yet to be set by the EC.
Charn is currently on trial in the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases on corruption charges, in connection with the procurement of relief supplies when he was the mayor of Pathum Thani PAO in 2012. The case was brought by the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
According to the Council of State, even though Charn was elected as mayor on June 30, the Anti-Corruption Act means he cannot not assume the post.
Charn received 203,032 votes, beating his rival, Pol Lt-Gen Kamronwit Toopkrachang, the former mayor, who got 201,212. He was supported by the Pheu Thai party.
