The cabinet has designated September 15 for the by-election in Constituency 1 of Phitsanuloke province, to fill a House seat left vacant by Padipat Suntiphada, a former MP of the Move Forward party.
Padipat, the first deputy House Speaker, was stripped of his parliamentary status, along with ten other party executive committee members by the Constitutional Court on August 7, after the party was found guilty of attempting to subvert constitutional monarchy.
The executive committee of the People’s party, the re-incarnation of the Move Forward party, has agreed to field Nathanon Chanaburanasak, to run in the by-election.
A coalition party, Palang Pracharath, will contest the by-election, because its candidate came second in the May general election last year, according to Kamphaeng Phet MP Pai Link.
He said he is confident that their candidate can win.
The Pheu Thai party, the core coalition party, will not field a candidate, in keeping up with the tradition that coalition parties will not compete against each other in a by-election.
