A group of royalists gathered in front of the US Embassy in Bangkok today, to protest against what they allege to be US interference in the internal affairs of Thailand.
Led by Anon Pankaew, the group submitted a protest note, addressed to the US ambassador, asking the US to stop interfering, citing the US State Department’s statement issued in response to the Constitutional Court’s ruling on Wednesday, dissolving the Move Forward party and banning its executive committee members from politics for ten years.
The royalist group said that such interference may affect the good relations between Thailand and the US and demanded an apology from the US government.
The rally was peaceful and the protesters have dispersed.
In its statement, the US State Department had said the court’s ruling disenfranchises the more than 14 million Thais who voted for Move Forward in the May general election last year and raises questions about their representation in Thailand’s electoral system.
It went on to note that the ruling also jeopardises Thailand’s democratic progress and runs counter to the aspirations of the Thai people for a strong democratic future.
