Deputy Finance Minister Vorapak Tanyawong announced his resignation today, after he was implicated by foreign media of being one of seven Thai politicians allegedly involved with transnational scam networks in Cambodia.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul ordered him to submit a written clarification of the allegation against him.
In his Facebook post, Vorapak said that, apart from being implicated of involvement with scam networks, his wife has also been accused of accepting bribes, in the form of cryptocurrency, despite the fact that she does not have a crypto account.
He said that, during the annual meeting of the World Bank and the IMF in Washington DC last week, he had been busy attending both multi-lateral and bilateral meetings and making arrangements for Thailand to host the meeting in October next year.
After his return from Washington DC last Sunday, Vorapak said he spent most of his time engaged in important issues of public interest, leaving him unable to respond quickly to the accusations being levelled against him.
He said he scheduled a press conference today though, adding that he has started a legal process against his accusers.
