PM Prayut in Bali to attend ASEAN informal gathering despite new quake

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and other ASEAN leaders have arrived in Bali today for an informal gathering of the regional leaders.

The inaugural ASEAN Leaders’ Gathering (ALG) ALG is a brainchild of Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The gathering is held simultaneously with the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank from Oct 8-14, the ASEAN leaders are also set to have meetings with IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde; World Bank president Jim Yong Kim and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The main topic of the meetings is “Achieving SDGs and Overcoming Development Gap through Regional and Global Collaborative Actions”

Ahead of his trip to Bali, Gen Prayut had received a report about an  earthquake off the island. Thai reporters already in Bali this morning said they felt tremors when the quake hit.

At least three people were killed as a shallow 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s popular tourist hotspots, Java and Bali islands.
