PM concerned with prospect of prolonged flooding in Phetchaburi province

Prime Minister Prauyuth Chan-o-cha has instructed all authorities concerned with water management to closely monitor water situation in all dams and reservoirs, especially the Kaeng Krachan dam in Phetchaburi province which is now on the brink of overflowing and threatening to flood the Muang and several other downstream districts.

Government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said today the prime minister had expressed serious concern especially with people living downstream of Kaeng Krachan dam along the Phetchaburi river in Muang, Kaeng Krachan and Tha Yang district as the anticipated flooding this year might last up to two months with water level between 80 cm to one metre.

He said the prime minister had given instructions to the Phetchaburi governor through the Ministry of Interior to notify people in the areas expected to be flooded to move their belongings to higher grounds, to arrange for evacuation centres, food and relief materials to be provided to flood victims.

Hospitals in the province were ordered to be on standby to provide medical help while public utilities, too, were put on readiness to fix electrical problems and to prepare transport for use.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Krisda Boonrach ordered all department heads to mete out measures to help the affected people, especially farmers.
