A contractor has been suspended from undertaking further road work on Rama II Road for three days by the Highways Department, after a huge crane lost balance and led to a steel beam it was carrying to crash down onto a passing pickup truck, wounding three people in the vehicle.
The accident, one of dozens reported on the road during the prolonged construction, occurred at about 2.30am on Sunday at kilometre marker 27 on the in-bound lanes. The crane was being used by Krung Thon Engineering Company, a contractor responsible for the construction of the elevated highway No 82m between Bang Khun Thian and Ban Praew.
The three injured people in the pickup truck were rushed to a nearby hospital by the company’s staff.
The accident led to the temporary closure of the parallel road at the scene for several house, as workers tried to move the crane and the steel beam from the road surface. Normal traffic flow on the in-bound lane resumed as normal at 9.30am.
The Highways Department later issued a statement, offering an apology for the accident and assuring that the injured will be taken good care of.
