Cold winds will herald stormy conditions across Thailand from today until next Thursday, after which temperatures in the northeast will drop by 1-3oC, said the Meteorological Department today, as it monitors tropical storm Krathon, which was over the western Pacific at 4am today.
The department said a moderate cold front from China is beginning to cover north-eastern and parts of the northern regions and the South China Sea. This weather system, when it converges with the monsoon trough, which is looming over the northern, lower north-eastern, central and eastern regions, will bring heavy rainfall and strong winds.
After the rains, temperatures in north-eastern provinces will fall by 1-3oC, said the department, as it also warned people to brace for possible flooding at the bases of mountains and in low-lying areas.
According to the department, two tropical storms were detected in the western Pacific at 4am today. One of them, Krathon, is centred to the east of Luzon Island in the Philippines and has the potential to intensify into a typhoon, due to the warm sea water, and is likely to move towards Taiwan before turning towards Japan.
Tropical storm Jebi, meanwhile, will not impact Thailand, but those who plan to fly to Taiwan between September 30 and October 2 should check weather reports there before their journey.
