Heroin bound for Australia seized at Bangkok airport

Thai narcotics and airport interdiction officials seized about 1.2kg of heroin on Friday, hidden in two parcels destined for a recipient in Australia, at the cargo terminal of Suvarnabhumi international airport.

Secretary General of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), Wichai Chaimongkhon, said today (Monday) that, although the amount seized is small, it is indicative of the collaboration between Thai and Australian illegal narcotic trafficking networks.

He said that, after the seizure, the ONCB immediately notified the Australian federal police based at the Australian Embassy in Bangkok, hoping that their colleagues in Australia will follow up on the case.

The heroin was declared as “A3 inkjet paper”, but Airport Interdiction Task Force officers became suspicious because the two packages were usually thick. They opened them and found four packs of heroin wrapped in aluminium foil.

According to the ONCB, since the start of this year, both the Airport and Seaport Interdiction Task Forces have seized 973.4kg of crystal methamphetamine (Ice) and 70.7kg of heroin from parcels bound for Australia.

The multiple seizures have led OBCB officials to arrest a number of drug trafficking suspects and the seizures of their assets.
