Persistent heavy rain and the overflow of water from the Mekong River and its tributaries have caused severe flooding in seven provinces in the Northeast, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department director-general Chayapol Thitisak said this morning.

The seven provinces are Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Bung Kan, Sakon Nakhon and Roi-et.

In Nakhon Phanom, eight districts — Muang, Renu Nakhon, Pla Pak, Tha Uthen, Phon Sawan, That Phanom, Ban Phaeng and Nakae — have been flooded, affecting 398 villages in 56 tambons and 128,098 rai of farmland.

In Mukdahan, 15,534 people of 6,754 households in Dong Luang, Muang, Nikhom Kham Soi, Don Tan, Wan Yai and Nong Sung districts have been affected by the overflow of water from the Mekong River. About 28,582 rai of farmland has been inundated.

In Amnat Charoen, the overflow of water from the Mekong River has hit 11 villages in Muang, Senangkha Nikhom, Hua Taphan and Chanuman districts, damaging about 1,930 rai of land for agriculture.

In Ubon Ratchathani, the overflow of water from the Mekong River has hit 63 villages in Khemmarat, Pho Sai, Khong Chiam, Na Tan and Si Muang Mai district, affecting 1,118 households with 2,964 people.

Four districts — Muang, Bung Khla, Si Wilai and Pak Khat — of Bung Kan province have also been hit by flooding after the Mekong River burst its banks. About 2,107 rai of farmland has been damaged.

In Sakon Nakhon, heavy rain has caused flooding in Sawang Daen Den and Phon Na Kaew districts.

In Roi-et, heavy flooding in Selaphum and Phon Thong district has affected about 3,971 households and damaged 28,230 rai of agriculture land.
