Test results have confirmed that a 66-year-old European male, who arrived in Thailand from Africa last week, is infected with the Mpox Clade 1B variant, said Disease Control Department Director General Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn today.
The man is the first patient to be diagnosed with this variant in Thailand. Dr Thongchai said Thailand will report the result to the World Health Organisation, as required by international health regulations.
The 43 people who had close contact with the patient will also be kept under close surveillance for 21 days. The doctor added that, if they develop a fever or rashes, they should go to a hospital immediately. So far, none have developed symptoms.
Restrictions will be imposed at entry points to Thailand, particularly at Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Those traveling from countries where outbreaks of the Clade 1B Mpox (monkeypox) variant are reported must register via the Thai Health Pass system and pass screening.
