Thailand today recorded five new COVID-19 cases, all in state quarantine, while the death toll remains 58.
According to the CCSA report, one of the five new cases is a 21-year old Thai student, who returned from Russia and entered state quarantine in Bangkok on July 9th. He had a fever and anosmia, but didn’t test positive for COVID-19 until July 31st.
The second case is a Thai returning from Indonesia, on the same flight as three other passengers who were found to be infected. He cleared an initial test, but the second test confirmed his infection, although he was still asymptomatic.
The third cases is a 31-year old Thai woman, arriving from Bahrain on the same flight as another passenger who tested positive. She also cleared by the first test, but was found to be infected in the second.
The fourth case is a Thai man returning from Germany who tested positive while in state quarantine in Chon Buri, and the fifth case is a 47-year old Thai woman returning from Japan, who tested positive while in quarantine in Chon Buri province.
Cumulative infections in Thailand, to date, are 3,317, with 3,142 recoveries and 117 still in hospital.
Meanwhile, Professor Dr. Yong Poovorawan, a respected virologist at Chulalongkorn University, said that the G strain of COVID-19 now accounts for about 90% of worldwide infections.
The G strain can spread quickly, but is no more dangerous for the patient than other strain, he added.
