Excessive PM2.5 airborne dust in Bangkok and surrounding areas on Sunday

Air quality in Bangkok and its surrounding areas is below standard today (Sunday), with the level of PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere measuring between 56 and 99 microns due to poor air circulation, according to the Meteorological Department.

The safe level is 50 microns or lower.

Phasi Charoen district is the worst affected area, with PM2.5 measured this morning at 99 microns, which is a threat to health, said the department.

PM2.5 health threatening levels were also found on:

  • Phutthamonthon 1 Road in Taling Chan district, 87 microns
  • Lat Krabang Road in Lat Krabang district, 86 microns
  • Hirunrujee Road in Thon Buri district, 85 microns
  • Charoen Nakhon Road in Khlong San district, 85microns

The department said that, in northern Thailand, dust particles are accumulating, due to weak air flow and lack of rainfall at this time of the year.

Meanwhile, the Pollution Control Department reported that air quality in Bangkok and its peripherals is likely to improve from Tuesday, when air circulation is expected to increase.

Many fires (hotspots) have been detected by satellite in northern provinces, which increase the level of dust in the atmosphere, said the department.
