The Pheu Thai Party has said it is ready to let the largest post-election party take the initiative in forming the government.
Julapun Amornvivat stopped short of sending a “come and get us” message to the election winner, which, as of 10 pm, appeared to be the Bhumjaithai Party.
However, he noted that the Pheu Thai Party “respects the decision of the Thai people.”
Pheu Thai briefly emerged as the runner-up during the vote count, but for most of the time it remained in third place, closely trailing the People’s Party.
As of 10 pm, Pheu Thai was close to securing 90 seats.
“We are all in a democratic parliamentary system, meaning the largest party should have the initiative to form a government,” he said.
When pressed on whether he had held high-level talks with Bhumjaithai, Julapan said: “There is nothing to discuss at the moment. All we should do now is respect the voice of the people.”
