The Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand has announced the first 38 entities that have been granted official permission to use the “Moo Deng” trademark on their products and services, said Director Attaporn Sriheran.
There are more applications to use the trademark pending approval from both Thai and foreign applicants, he said, adding that the results will be released soon.
The official logo features the now world famous open-mouthed pigmy hippo calf with the text “Moo Deng” in English.
The logo was created by the winner of a design contest held by ZPOT, after receiving the most online votes.
The director said that the main objective of the ZPOT’s decision to register the Moo Deng trademark with the Intellectual Property department was not to profit from the licence fees, but to use the money for the benefit of society and the welfare of animals in general.
“Moo Deng” (bouncy pig) has become the star of Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province, after a zookeeper posted images and clips of her bouncing around on the zoo’s social media platforms.
Her global and domestic fame has increased the number of visitors to the zoo, from 9,000 to more than 170,000 per day.
Restaurants and food stalls in and around the zoo are, as a result, also benefiting from the calf’s popularity.
