The prime minister met today with Mathias Cormann, secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), initiating the process for Thailand to join the 38-member organisation.
Cormann officially submitted the 'Roadmap for Accession' to Thailand, the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia.
In July, Thailand received approval from the 38 current OECD member countries to begin accession discussions. By joining the Paris-based organisation, Thailand would stand to benefit by attracting investment from the members’ leading firms and countries.
Thailand is the second Southeast Asian country, after Indonesia, to take the initial steps on the path to OECD membership.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira stated that it was an excellent opportunity to discuss Thailand’s proposal for OECD membership, adding that the government will work to upgrade and reform policies across all sectors to meet OECD requirements.
