Pig farmers have announced a two baht/kg increase in live pig farm-gate prices, to 68-76 baht/kg (depending on region), effective today, citing increased production costs.
Sitthiphan Thanakiatpinyo, president of the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand (SRA), explained that the prices of animal feed, such as maize and tapioca starch, have increased, forcing pig farmers to adjust the farm-gate prices accordingly. He also said that fewer live pigs are getting to market while demand remains high.
The latest adjustment is the second within two weeks. This brings the new prices by region to:
- 68-70 baht/kg in the western region
- 70-73 baht/kg in eastern region
- 74 baht/kg in northern region
- 76 baht/kg in southern region
Sitthiphan noted that, even if the price of live pigs has started to recover, production costs remain high, citing the cost of tapioca starch, which has increased from 16 baht/kg to 16.60 baht/kg, even though the price of maize has stabilised.
He also said that pig farmers are closely monitoring the prices of animal feeds.
