The Board of Investment approved two major data centre projects today, worth an estimated 60 billion baht, to cope with the rapid expansion of cloud services for consumers and businesses in Thailand and the ASEAN region.
BOI Secretary-General Narit Therdsteerasukdi said today that one of the projects, worth about 32 billion baht, is to be implemented by Quartz Computing, an affiliate of Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc., and another, worth about 28 billion baht, will be implemented by Digital Land Services, which is affiliated with GDS.
Both data centres will be located in Chon Buri province, with the first, by Digital Land Services, to be operational in 2026 and the other in 2027.
Narit said that the two data centres are hyper-scale projects, which will accommodate applications using 5G technology, cloud computing, the Internet of Things and AI technology.
He disclosed that, so far, investors have applied for incentives for 47 data centre and cloud service projects, worth a total of 173 billion baht, with most of the investment coming from the US, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, India and Thailand.
He also said that the BOI have endorsed a project by a Chinese company, Cheng Yi Technology, for the production of precursor materials for printed circuit boards.
The BOI also agreed on measures to help BOI-promoted businesses which were affected by recent flooding, by exempting import tariffs on machinery and equipment to replace that damaged by the flooding.
