An earthquake, measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale, hit Sangkhla district of the western province of Kanchanaburi at about 3am Sunday morning, the Meteorological Department reports.

The epicentre of the tremor was located at about six kilometres below ground in Nong Lu sub-district and was caused by the movement of the Three Pagoda fault line.

The quake was felt by people living in Nong Lu sub-district, with some saying that they heard the shaking of metal sheets on their roofs. Several vendors are reported to have run out of the market building for fear that it may collapse.

Reports of damage are expected later today.

The latest shock, of 4.5 magnitude, was reported in Sangkhla Buri district, but no damage was reported.

On Friday, 13 hospitals and over 30 school buildings in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces sustained minor cracks as a result of a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in Kengtung township in Myanmar’s Shan state.
