Deputy House speaker says 3 sittings enough to consider Pita’s PM candidacy

The Thai parliament will sit on July 13th to select the next prime minister and will sit again on July 19th and 20th if it cannot make the selection, Deputy House Speaker, Pichet Chuamuangphan, told the media on Thursday.

Although there is no limit on the number of parliament sittings for the selection of the prime minister, he said that three should be enough to consider the prime ministerial candidacy of Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat.

He admitted that it is not easy or convenient for all members of the House and Senate to attend joint sittings on frequent basis.

The Pheu Thai MP said that it will depend parliament and the eight coalition parties to decide what to do next, noting that the coalition parties are still bound together by their memorandum of understanding.

Pichet said that he has no clue how many senators will vote for Pita, adding that, after having spoken with some senators, it is clear that they would like a new government in place as quickly as possible, so the country can move forward.

Pita’s candidacy needs the support of at least 376 votes from the MPs and senators, but the eight coalition parties only command 312 votes in the House.
