Croatia booted Russia out of World Cup in penalty shootout

Croatia kicked host Russia out of the World Cup by winning a grueling quarter-final on penalty shootout.   Russian fans erupted when it looked like another World Cup upset was on its way after Denis Cheryshev scored the first goal in the 31st minute.  But Croatia hit back only eight minutes later when Andrej Kramaric headed in an equalizer.  The match went into extra time and Croatia took the lead with Domagoj Vida’s header in the 100th minute. But the Russians reignited their World Cup hopes when Mario Fernandes headed in the second equalizer to take the tie to penalties.  But it was Fernandes who missed the decisive shot  in the shootout that saw Croatia advance to the semi-finals to face England.
