The Criminal Court remanded iCon Group CEO Waratphol Waratvorakul to the Bangkok Remand Prison today for 12 days, after his lawyer did not apply for bail on his behalf.
He joins 17 of his colleagues, who were remanded to the Bangkok Remand Prison and the Central Women’s Correctional Institution yesterday. All are currently charged with defrauding the public and violations of computer-related crime laws by allegedly operating a Ponzi scheme, under the guise of online direct marketing.
About 250 more investors have filed complaints with the Central Investigation Bureau since yesterday. All were issued with queue numbers as they waited to be interviewed by the police.
Most of the investors live in and around Bangkok. They claim that they each spent up to a million baht on membership fees to join iCon Group as sales agents, and on advertising to promote the company’s products on social media.
Meanwhile, secretary-general of the Palang Pracharath party, Paiboon Nititawan, announced today that he has proposed that party leader, General Prawit Wongsuwan, immediately removes Samart Jenchaichitvanich as the deputy spokesman for the party.
Samart is accused of being the mysterious man who was heard in an audio clip, posted on social media, allegedly demanding payment from the iCon Group, in exchange for helping to clear the case against the company.
Paiboon said Samart cannot, however, be fired from the party without the consent of the executive committee, which is due to meet on October 29th, adding that he has tried to persuade Samart to resign voluntarily, but to no avail.
