Five Japanese men, including a member of the Yakuza, were arrested by immigration police in Chon Buri province on Wednesday for allegedly operating a call centre which preyed on the elderly in Japan.
Pol Col Ratthachote Chotekhun, deputy investigating commander of the Immigration Bureau, said that the gang used to operate in Malaysia and moved into Thailand in September this year.
Based on information provided by the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok, immigration police yesterday raided two locations in Chon Buri, arresting one at the first and three at the second.
The police seized several cell phones and laptops and a list of over 50,000 potential elderly Japanese victims living in Japan.
Pol Col Ratthachote said the Japanese police should investigate how the gang got hold of the personal details of their potential targets.
