Widespread flooding in Bangkok this morning was caused by heavy rain, induced by the arrival of cold winds from the South China Sea, resulting in a collision of easterly and southeasterly winds, but it was not caused by high tides or northern runoffs, according to the Hydro Informatics Institute, a public organisation.
Heavy rain, measured at more than 90mm, lashed Bangkok from 2am to 5am this morning, particularly in the Chatuchak, Bangkok Noi, Khlong Toei, Phra Nakhon and Phaya Thai districts, inundating several roads, such as Ratchayothin and Lat Phrao, and causing a nightmare for many motorists.
Some roads were temporarily blocked by traffic police, to prevent vehicles from stalling in the floodwater.
The forecast is for moderate to heavy rain in some areas of Bangkok today, but less rain from tomorrow, when cold weather is predicted.
Temperatures are is expected to drop as low as 22oC in the morning.
