Chuan says Democrats need a resolution to join Pheu Thai coalition

Former Democrat party leader Chuan Leekpai said today (Sunday) that the party must adopt a resolution, in accordance with the party’s regulations, if it wants to join the coalition led by the Pheu Thai party.

Meanwhile, another former party leader, Banyat Bantadtan, said they should focus on rebuilding and restoring the party’s image and popularity, instead of joining any Pheu Thai-led government, adding that, if the party’s executive committee decides to join the coalition, he would have to comply with such decision.

The party is currently split, with the north-eastern faction wanting to join the Pheu Thai-led coalition, and one member of the faction recently flying to Hong Kong to meet fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is believed to still calls the shots in the Pheu Thai party.

Asked about this meeting, Chuan said that the party hadnothing to do with it.

Banyat said that the party’s executive committee must think very carefully before joining the coalition, particularly given the Democrat party’s historical stance against Thaksin regime.

The party is yet to elect its new leader and executive committee, after the recent resignation of party leader Jurin Laksanawisit and party secretary-general Chalermchai Sri-on.

The party failed to elect a new leader and committee today, as the general meeting lacked a quorum.
