Surin's Sangka district is facing severe flooding, after heavy rain, induced by typhoon Ragasa, lashed the province throughout Monday night, causing water levels in reservoirs, rivers and canals to rise and overflow.
Provincial officials said today that runoffs from the Phnom Dong Rak mountain range have drained into already swollen natural waterways and reservoirs.
Several roads in the district, such as Route 24, are under a metre of water in several places and have become impassable to all vehicles. Highway police have, however, been deployed to direct traffic and to advise motorists on alternative routes.
Floodwater in the district township is between 30cm and 80cm deep, making it difficult, if not impossible for motorists to use them.
Officials say that the Huai Ta Pad Reservoir, which is receiving water discharged through Huai Khanad Dam, was partially damaged, sending water gushing downstream into Sangka sub-district.
The officials also say that floodwater from Sangka district is flowing through Si Narong, Sikhoraphum and Samrong Thap districts, before emptying into the Mun River.
