A total of 77 aftershocks, of magnitudes between 2.4 and 7.1 on the Richter scale, have been detected since 1.20pm yesterday, but most of them were not felt in Thailand, according to the Meteorological Department.

The original strong tremor, measuring 8.2 magnitude on the Richter scale or 7.7 on the moment magnitude scale (MMS) of USGS, was detected at 1.20pm yesterday at a depth of 10km under Mandalay town, which is about 1,100 km from Bangkok, the Mineral Resources Department reported today.
It explained that the quake was felt strongly in Thailand’s central region, especially in Bangkok, due to the soft soil. When the shock waves moved through the clay under Bangkok, the shock waves slowed down, resulting in an increase in the amplitude and the escalating strength of vibrations felt in the capital, said the department.
Meanwhile, a tremor of 4.1 magnitude on the Richter scale was detected in Wiang Nua sub-district in Mae Hong Son province at 11.21pm Friday night, as a result of movement of the Wiang Haeng fault near the Thai-Myanmar border.
There are no reports of damage yet, but the tremor was felt by people in Wiang Tai sub-district.
