Four communities in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district evacuated

People living in four flood-prone communities in Mae Rai district of Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Mai have been advised to evacuate to temporary shelters, at Phrom Vihara temple and the district’s conference hall, immediately, ahead of the anticipated arrival today of a mass of water from upstream, which is expected to exacerbate the current flooding.

Dam construction proposed to block arsenic pollution in the Kok River

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has proposed the idea of constructing a dam across the Kok River, to block toxic contaminants, such as heavy metals discharged from unregulated Chinese-run mining operations in Shan state of Myanmar, from flowing downstream into Thai territory.

The Thai premier has assigned the Army, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Foreign Ministry to negotiate with the Myanmar government to halt the discharge of wastewater contaminated with heavy metals into the Kok and Sai rivers.
