The national police chief has ordered legal action to be taken against a group of men who attacked a border police officer, providing security at a municipal polling station in Songkhla province on Sunday.
Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet condemned the attack, saying it was carried out by those who believe they are above the law.
He ordered the Songkhla police chief to lead the investigation and ensure that the attackers are held accountable, regardless of who they may be.
Pol Senior Sergeant Major Nisathit Kongthep was stationed at a polling station in Pawong sub-district on Sunday and attempted to warn a group of men against taking photographs inside the polling station.
One of the men, later identified as a member of the Provincial Administrative Organisation Council, became angry and raised his voice at Nisathit before leaving the venue, but a group of the men who remained allegedly attacked the officer before fleeing the scene.
Nisathit, who suffered injuries to his eyes and wrists, is now receiving medical treatment at Songkhla Hospital.
In his statement, Kitrat added that, once the attackers are detained, police should also examine their criminal records, in order to prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
